Researchers at the University of Otago looking for ways to treat infectious diseases are trying to better understand how bacteria and viruses interact and evolve.

Dr. Simon Jackson of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology says groups around the world are investigating how viruses that infect bacteria could be used instead of antibiotics, even to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
He added that Otago researchers were working more at the grbadroots level, which could contribute to the overall application of bacterial destruction in the future.
