KARACHI: A weeklong polio campaign as part of National Immunization Days (NIDs) is due to begin Monday in the whole city, as in the rest of the country. The campaign aims to target 2.3 million children under the age of five in the 192 union councils in the city, officials said.
The campaign was the first of the year that fell in the countries' effort for PID, they added.
More than 13,000 polio teams would walk the streets of the city and visit each house to vaccinate children under five.
City leader Iftikhar Shawllani, who also chairs the Sindh government-led polio eradication working group, will launch the campaign.
The Commissioner chaired a meeting of the working group in his office, which examined the arrangements for an effective campaign.
Officials said the meeting discussed the micro-polio plan and announced that comprehensive arrangements for the campaign had been finalized for Monday's efforts.
Those involved include the coordinator of the polio emergency operations center in Sindh, all the deputy commissioners, senior police and paramilitary rangers, district health officials, and the police. city, representatives of international partners, including the WHO Foundation, Unicef, Bill and Melinda Gates and Rotary. Club.
The meeting was informed that the polio virus found in wastewater was still circulating in some parts of the high-risk trade union councils. He added that efforts were being made to completely eliminate the virus by administering polio vaccines to children five years old and under.
The Deputy Commissioners were asked to ensure that children were vaccinated with close coordination between officials and representatives in accordance with the micro-plan.
He added that the strategy should be targeted to ensure that poliovirus circulation is successfully interrupted during the campaign.
The WHO team leader expressed his satisfaction with these efforts, indicating that these efforts had improved in the city and that the results achieved with regard to the reduction of the number of Missed children and those whose parents had refused vaccination had been significantly reduced. He hoped that work in the same spirit and with the same dedication to the eradication of the crippling disease would continue.
The Commissioner endorsed the views of international partners: "we should not be lax before the complete eradication of polio."
