The Presidency reacted to the attack on the government of President Muhammadu Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obasanjo on Sunday launched several attacks on Buhari and his government to convince Nigerians not to vote at the upcoming All Progressives Congress, APC.
Femi Adesina, the president's special adviser on media and presidential advertising, asked the former president to tell Nigerians if the elections had been free and fair during his tenure.
Speaking today on television on TV channels, Adesina said: "Let me start by saying that President Muhammadu Buhari has always respected former President Olusegun Obasanjo. You know that they come from a riding in which seniority is eternal.
"President Obasanjo was superior to President Buhari in the army. President Buhari was under his command for three and a half years as oil minister.
"Thus, the former President Obasanjo is a senior official of President Buhari, whatever the day and the hour, and the President grants him the courtesy necessary to each meeting.
"Thus, President Buhari will never be rude, this respect is sustainable and lasting.
"Speaking of today's statement, I can only say that what the former President said was his opinion of a man.
"There are about 196 million Nigerians. If a man says something, he best shares his opinion, that does not mean that it is the gospel.
"What the former president said, that is his opinion and it is a democracy, there is right.
"You also forget that in this country, when former President Obasanjo was in power, many things constituted impunity within this government.
"So, as they said, the viewer sees more things than the player.
"It is so easy for the former president to sit in his chair and criticize a government, but many things that constitute impunity would have occurred under his government.
"As I have said and as you have observed, it is only the opinion of a man and this does not constitute the gospel. "
Also expressing on the claim of increasing the rate of insecurity, he said: "There are security concerns but I tell you that these security issues are being addressed. Be solved.
"Even at the time of Obasanjo, Odi murders had occurred. Under him was the mbadacre of Zaki Biam; under him, there were a lot of clashes with the OPC; under him, sharia riot, ethnic clashes between OPCs, loss of life. So no one can come to judge another government. When the worst things happen under his government. "
On the allegation that the ruling APC was planning to rig the next elections in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, he said: "Yes, the INEC can still defend itself and I'm sure they'll do it.
"But let's imagine this kind of allegation from someone who told us in 2007 that the elections were going to be held or not and that the beneficiary of these elections came to tell us that the elections that had led him to in power were tainted.
"Now, for that kind of person to come and tell us that the elections will not be free and fair, was there a free and fair election when he led his own?" This is the question that Nigerians should ask themselves. "
