Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that President Muhammadu Buhari had demonstrated "total incompetence, tolerance of evil and corruption".
The old statesman issued a new criticism of the president in an interview with BBC Pidgin.
Obasanjo said that he thought that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Democratic People's Party (PDP), would be "twice as best" as Buhari.
He added that everyone could steal the entire country and free it as long as it belongs to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in power.
"Atiku is not a messiah; he is not a saint. Fortunately, he did not pretend to be. He did not claim false sanctity. He came here. He acknowledged his past misdeeds and expressed remorse, "Obasanjo said.
"I am a believer and a Christian as such and the teaching of God in my own religion is to forgive so that you can be forgiven. In fact, it goes further: if you do not forgive, you have no right to wait for God's forgiveness.
"I am a sinner and I want God to forgive my sins. So, if someone who has offended me comes to ask for forgiveness, I have to forgive him. It's number one.
"Secondly, the immediate choice we have in the Nigerian situation today and in the immediate future is 2019 is between the APC party candidate and the PDP. Other minor parties will line up or not be relevant enough.
"So, if APC blocks Buhari and PDP, Atiku, and from what I know about Buhari and what you know, he did and showed that he's totally incompetent, nepotism, tolerates the harm and misconduct, including corruption.
"The weakness of the body, the spirit and the totality of Buhari, compared to Atiku, I think Atiku will behave twice as well as Buhari.
"Now you can fly all over Nigeria and if you belong to APC, you are safe. Corruption is not just about stealing money; Nepotism is a form of corruption. "
In his speech on the state of the nation Sunday, Obasanjo accused the president of bringing the country back to the Sani Abacha era.
On Tuesday, Buhari and Obasanjo met at the State Council meeting, where the former president delivered the opening prayer.
