Sales figures for December 2018 – and elsewhere in the year in general – were revealed by the NPD Group. And without surprise, Marvel's Spider-Man The PlayStation 4 has become one of this year's best performances, comfortably ranking sixth among the top 10 bestsellers in 2018.
But the NDP's Mat Piscatella has broken it down again on Twitter, explaining how Insomniac Games' Sloming Web adventure has become one of the best-selling superhero adventures in the world. years.

Marvel's Spider-Man has been the most successful superhero game in almost 15 years. What Insomniac and Sony have achieved with this game is absolutely amazing. Another game that exceeded all expectations.

It's a mbadive statement, especially since it includes other superhero titles that have been touched by players, including the Batman: Arkham Games.
But the real question is: what was the previous best-selling game?
Dating back to around 15 years, it could very well be Treyarch's own Spider-Man 2, which was released in 2004 and perfected the formula of an open world design for the hero, as a result of the original Spider Man in 2001. This has not been finalized, but it's probably the previous champion.
That says a lot about Insomniac's work, not to mention Sony and Marvel's talent for getting a license and creating a superhero game that fans could enjoy with other Spidey-related adventures, including Spider-Man: in the Spider-Verse, which has become one of the most announced films of the last year with fun animation styles, stories and performances.
Congratulations to Insomniac Games for its amazing work. Now, the real question is what comes next. More costumes? Another potential chapter? Dare we say, a sequel? Or maybe even a commitment to Square Enix Avengers universe? Only time will tell, but we can not wait to see what the next step will be.
