Approximately 2,500 jobs will be created
The minority in Parliament criticized the government over AngloGold Ashanti's current deal, which led to the reopening of the Obuasi mine on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, when they say the situation in Ghana will be worse.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday led a delegation of great power to officially open the mine with the badurance that the local content policy will be respected until the letter to ensure that the natives get jobs.
But the minority in Parliament, which has joined its majority counterparts to give nearly $ 300 million in tax relief to AngloGold Ashanti Ghana for the restructuring and reorganization of the mine, said the deal as it stands would Ghanaians in difficulty.
Adam Mutawakilu, a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Mining and Energy, said: "The most critical thing to ask is what we get out of this development agreement, it's very important for everything the world.
"We should not just focus on ourselves, we have reopened it when in reality, agreement is not the norm we should brag about. You will realize that technically they have all avoided talking about tax regimes. What does the Ghanaian government or people have to gain from this development agreement?
"The Mine Workers Union has raised questions about what we call contract mining, which says it will worsen the situation for workers and that the government should review the matter, but the government has refused. Thus, the people who will be engaged will be much worse off than the old AngloGold. "
Meanwhile, with around 2,500 jobs to be created, the government is confident that Obuasi, a once vibrant city, will be revived, with improved living conditions for its inhabitants.
In addition, Nana Akufo-Addo noted at the opening of the mine that the government is expected to generate revenues of about 2.16 billion dollars over the next 22 years, in the form of royalties, Corporate taxes and withholding taxes.
