Amazon enters the game of robots with an electric basket on its wheels called Amazon Scout. The e-commerce giant is the last company to try this type of automated delivery solution on the last mile after a series of startups, as well as experiments conducted by large companies such as Domino's Pizza and PepsiCo .
The details on the Scout are thin on the ground, but the design resembles that of the existing robots. In fact, the Scout seems almost identical to the devices of Starship Technologies, an Estonian start-up that was a first-to-market.
The Scout has six wheels, is powered by an electric battery and is moving slowly. Only six aircraft are currently being tested in a single area of Snohomish County, Washington, where they will deliver "day" packages Monday through Friday. According to Amazon, the robots will be accompanied by human supervisors. This helps ensure that the devices can "navigate safely and efficiently around pets, pedestrians and everything in their path".
Similar trials are underway in cities around the world and in more isolated locations, such as university campuses and office complexes. Cheap sensors and advances in machine learning have made navigating this type of robot relatively easy to handle. And when the device commits an error, the risks are relatively low (unlike autonomous cars). Amazon Scout is taking a path that could become very common very soon.
