Three other people died Wednesday night after the explosion in the mining concession of a Chinese mining company, Shaanxi Mining Ltd., in the Far East region.

This brings to 16 the number of deaths in the Gbani mine explosion.

Doctors are currently trying to save other people who remain in critical condition, reports Albert Sory, Upper East correspondent.

The bodies were deposited at the Upper East Regional Hospital.

At the same time, police arrested five people in connection with the mining accident in Talensi district.

Joy News brings together the miners who had ignored a previous warning not to prospect because Shaanxi had planned to detonate their compound with explosives.

They would however have ignored the warning and would have been caught in the mines after the blast.

The Minerals Commission ordered Shaanxi to temporarily close the mine.

Regional Minister Paulina Abayage told Joy News Wednesday that company officials were being questioned by police.

The tragedy

The tragedy occurred Wednesday at dawn as workers in the Talensi district-based company blew up explosives in an attempt to extract them.

Witnesses say that powerful clouds of smoke have strangled them.

Patrick Atobrah said that three minors found to be illegal had been brought dead.

Four others died later during a treatment.

But less than 24 hours after the blast, nine others died.

One survivor told Joy News that he had been warned of an impending explosion in one of the company's wells, but had ignored it.

He told Albert Sore, regional news correspondent for Joy News in Upper East East, that an army of illegal miners was convinced that the blast would be minor, just like the previous ones.

The survivor has set their number at around 500. The reporter said he saw the thirteenth miner being taken to the morgue during the last hour.

The company warned illegal miners to stay out of their compound to prevent more deaths and injuries.

The company's safety standards and working conditions have been called into question. The company was ordered to suspend operations in May 2017.
