Ellen Page exploded on the film scene in 2005, correcting the wrongs of independence Hard candy. She then burst even bigger in 2006, playing the favorite of the Kitty Pryde fans in X-Men: The Final Clash, before tackling the world of anti-crime militia in 2010 Great. In other words, Page knows very well the comic books, the heroes, the bad guys and the potentially scary men who take young "gifted" under their wings and in their remote homes.
This experience makes it the ideal candidate to lead the distribution of Netflix's new 2007 adaptation. The Umbrellas Academy, from My Chemical Romance Singer Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá. (The cover of "Hazy Shade of Winter" by Way gives this new trailer its resounding soundtrack.) But this particularly powerful tale is more than just stylish fighting scenes and matching uniforms. His The Umbrellas AcademyThe dysfunctional family dynamics – just like his time-traveling butterfly, his talking chimpanzee and his mother robot – made such a compelling turn in the clbadic comic strip formula.
On the eve of the release of this new trailer, Page spoke with Vanity Fair about why this This project was the one to bring her back to the world of costumed superheroes. The story follows seven powerful children, born the same day in 1989 in mysterious circumstances around the world (with 36 other miracle babies). These seven men were adopted by a rich and mysterious elderly man, the Monocle, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). As Professor Charles Xavier of X Men Fame (but much colder and more insidious), Hargreeves brings his overpowering brood to fight crime; Unlike Professor X, Hargreeves also uses the fame of his defendants for comic books, merchandise and glory.
The Netflix series is taken over as a remnant of damaged and adult Hargreeve children – played by Page, Game of thrones alum Tom Hopper, Misfits prefer Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, and Emmy Raver-Lampman– to gather at the family home at the news of the death of their father. A bit like 2018 The obsession of Hill House, The Umbrellas Academy relies on the outward signs of gender narrative to tell a story of inherited generational trauma. The show moves in time to show both the psychologically injured adult siblings of Hargreeves, and how they have come to this end, as they work together reluctantly to solve the mystery of the death of their father and eventually to prevent the apocalypse from ending up there. Mary J. Blige and Hunter of spirit burst Cameron Britton Co-star as time-traveling badbadins who can be friends or enemies.
"When you do a breakdown," said Page on the central themes of the series – who feel more topical than ever -, these kids are really being abused. [Hargreeves] Narcissism is linked to sociopathy. These children are now in their thirties and know how all this pain is in their lives. "
But The Umbrellas Academy is not only a deep emotion in the kind of superheroes: it's also an incredible style. Quoted page Harold and Maude director Hal Ashby as well as Wes Anderson, as unexpected visual inspirations for a story involving time travel, necromancy and a digitally rendered chimpanzee. The funny, Andersonian atmosphere of adult-sibling interactions irresistibly reminds those of another damaged family: the Tenenbaums, while Gallagher's character jumps out of time thanks to his blazer in school uniform and to his old man trapped -young-boy's body vibe, really a Max Fischer of Rushmore type. The Umbrellas Academy was also created for television by Noah Hawley collaborater Steve Blackman, so aficionados of prestige television can throw Legion and Fargo on the stack of stylish inspiration too.
Page is not inclined to go too far in the meanders of his character, for fear of spoiling things for people who have not yet read the comic. But when the story begins, her character, Vanya, is the only child of Hargreeves without superpowers – and this alone may have left her the most bruised of all: "She's really struggling with the world. anxiety, depression and isolation, and an inability to have personal relationships, so [she] has a huge way to go throughout the season. "But despite all the dark and emotional family tragedy of Hargreeves, The Umbrellas Academy is also crossed with a certain humor, provided mainly by Sheehan, who stole the scene, and steals Klaus: the blackest sheep of a family of marginals.
Page, Sheehan, and Rest will bring to life their dysfunctional family when 10 episodes of The Umbrellas Academy first on Netflix on February 15th.
