Vietnam 0-1 Japan
Al Maktoum Stadium, Dubai
With both teams playing at one kilometer per minute, you could not leave her eyes. Impressive, it was Vietnam, which was neglected, which seemed the most dangerous, with Nguyen Cong Phuong, a livewire at the front. A confusion at the back almost offered them a first match, but Japan remained true to reality. Their dominant central defenders, Maya Yoshida and Takehiro Tomiyasu, almost led them to the front – the former seeing an effort ruled out after the VAR's help.
Takumi Minamino made a great save from Dang Van Lam on the penalty spot and Samurai Blue came back stronger, finding crucial additional equipment. Ritsu Doan was a constant threat and suitably won, and then dispatched, the decisive penalty – this time aided by VAR. Vietnam was certainly not threatened later, but it was not able to give a clear chance to equalize.
PR China 0-3 IR Iran
Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
This game could have exploded from the beginning, though there had been no interventions aimed at saving goals on either side of Ramien Rezaien and Zheng Zhi. The first match of Iran was finally given by the superb Sardar Azmoun – a terror for China – leaving Marcello Lippi cursing their previous defeat. Azmoun was the second best goal to join him, but the hesitant defense of Feng Xiaoting opened the door and, after conceding the ball, gave Mehdi Taremi the title of his third of the tournament.
His fourth should have followed, but for a staggering failure, but it was not decisive. Azmoun was once again the catalyst for the second run, misleading the Chinese bottom line before giving Yan Junling the chance to take it on his own. Junling refused Ehsan Haji Safi to keep hope alive in the second half, but Karim Ansarifard jumped in the final moments for a deserved third.
