Professor Jonah Onuoha of the Department of Political Science of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, described the withdrawal of Dr. Oby Ezekwesili from the presidential race at the eleventh hour as embarrbading and suspicious.
Onuoha, who is the director of US Studies at UNN, made this statement in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Nsukka on Friday.
According to him, for Ezekwesili, the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), to withdraw from the race less than a month before the election, there was another party for which she was working even before Have picked up his ticket.
"The presidential candidate for the withdrawal of the ACPN from Thursday's presidential race is embarrbading and distrustful for me.
"His withdrawal at the last minute is a blow and a serious setback for the faithful who campaign for her for the presidential election of February 16," he said.
He added that the quick reaction of the party's national working committee was an indication that Ezekwesili had not consulted party leaders before making his decision public.
"If the presidential candidate does not have a hidden agenda, why did she not inform the party leadership of her intention to withdraw from the presidential race?
"I know that she did not wake up one morning to make the decision to withdraw, she has been thinking about it for at least a month," he said.
The political science professor said Ezekwesili's excuse that she had withdrawn from the presidential race to allow her to join a coalition that would prevent the Progressive Congress or the People's Democratic Party from winning the presidential election. February 16 presidential election was false.
"If she knew that she has a coalition to join, why did she choose the ACPN ticket, thus preventing other party members with a real ambition to be a candidate for the party presidency.
"What will she say to all the support groups and to the people who have made financial contributions to her presidential candidacy, will she repay them after having disappointed them," she said. he asks.
Onuoha said that what Ezekwesili had demoralized the great hope that some women had the power, by the grace of God, to make women the first president of the country for the first time.
"This is a serious disappointment for Nigerian women and, as such, Ezekwesili should apologize unreservedly to the women of the country," he said.
