A South African labor court ruled "illegal" the suspension of a teacher from a school in North West Province who allegedly placed students according to their race, according to local media reports.

Elana Barkhuizen was suspended on January 10 after sharing online a picture of white and black students sitting at separate desks.

The picture was originally published on the WhatsApp group of parents.

Sello Lehari, Minister of Education of the North West Province, said that the Schweizer-Reneke school's explanation was that "learners were separated according to those who could understand the Afrikaans and English ".

The photo triggered protests that provoked tense clashes between white and black residents inside and outside the school premises.

In her defense, Ms. Barkhuizen stated that she was not the one who had seated the children.

She said that she only watched them because her clbad was right next door and that she only took the picture for sending to parents who informed her of their children, reports the information website The Citizen.

She said that the school authorities had not listened to her explanations.

The teacher who sat the students stays in school while Ms. Lehari announced that two more people would be suspended, reports News24.

Labor Court Judge Connie Prinsloo concluded that Ms. Barkhuizen had not been heard before she was suspended.


"I am very happy, I want to thank all those who supported and stood by me, and I am happy that justice has been done," said Barkhuizen at the end of the ruling.

Although the judge ruled that she could return to school on Friday, she chose to request a few days off, which was granted, reports News24.
