Steve Bruce's son, Alex, will join a former coach of Aston Villa at the new club

Alex Bruce is about to join a new club – and this will involve getting to know Aston Villa's former coach, Steve Clarke.

Bruce is trying to cancel his contract at Wigan Athletic to allow him to go to Kilmarnock with Clarke.

The 34-year-old defenseman has not been able to make his debut in the Paul Cook championship this season.

Bruce hopes to extend his playing career, which includes a spell directed by his father Steve Bruce in Birmingham City.

Subject to the completion of a financial program in Wigan, Bruce will join Clarke in Kilmarnock for an 18-month contract, according to reports north of the border.

Clark returned to Scotland to begin his coaching career after an unsuccessful stint as Roberto Di Matteo's badistant in 2016, a period that preceded Steve Bruce's time at Villa Park.

Bruce senior, meanwhile, should take office at Sheffield, his rival of the Championship Villa, Wednesday, next week.

He spoke for the first time of his dismissal at Aston Villa.

Bruce was fired by Villa in October and replaced by Dean Smith.

The 58-year-old was named to lead Sheffield, his rival at the Villa Championship on Wednesday, and will officially take over next month.

Bruce did not make a statement when he was sacked by Villa, but has now spoken to BBC Football Daily.
