The main Nigerian opposition party suspended its presidential election campaign for 72 hours to protest the suspension of the country's highest judge by President Muhammadu Buhari, the paper said.
The president said on Friday that he had suspended Nigeria's chief justice, Walter Onnoghen, who had been asked to appear in court over alleged breaches of the rules relating to the declaration of badets.
Onnoghen has not responded to the accusations and his lawyers say the court does not have the power to judge him.
"President Muhammadu Buhari has unleashed despotism in our country and we reject it in its entirety," Kola Ologbodiyan, spokesman for the main opposition party, the Democratic People's Party, told Al Jazeera.
"We will ask Nigerians to resist President Buhari's recourse to self-help.
"It is clear, and obviously also, that Nigerians have reached a consensus on the rejection of President Buhari.
"Buhari saw his failure before the polls and is determined to push our country into the abyss of the dictatorship We resist this! We will deploy all the measures provided by our laws", Ologbodiyan said.
Buhari, a military leader in the 1980s and elected to power in 2015, is seeking a new term in an election scheduled for Feb. 16. The stake is the control of the largest crude oil producer in Africa and one of the largest economies in the continent. .
Nigerian justice helped resolve electoral disputes after past votes, some of which were tainted by violence and vote rigging. The Chief Justice could preside over a disputed election result.
"At first, we are suspending our campaign for 72 hours, and we hope that President Buhari will hear the voice of all democracy lovers in the world and restore democracy in Nigeria immediately and without reservation," said the Democratic Party. People. (PDP) said in a statement.
