A protester was killed during an anti-government demonstration in Omdurman town on Thursday, a senior Sudanese official told reporters.

"A protester died in Omdurman today," said at a press conference Amer Ibrahim, head of the prosecutor's office committee charged with investigating violence at protests at the city center. 39, nationally.

Ibrahim did not specify how the protester had been killed.

Ibrahim said another protester, injured during a protest on Jan. 13 in Khartoum, was also dead.

"Up to now, 29 people have died during protests," Ibrahim said.

Human rights groups estimate that more than 40 people have died since demonstrations erupted in Sudan on December 19, after the government's decision to triple the price of bread.

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Thursday in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum, on the other side of the Nile, but were confronted by riot police with tear gas, witnesses said.

In addition to Omdurman, simultaneous rallies were held in several Sudanese towns and villages.

The protests that have shaken Sudan since last month have turned into anti-government protests nationwide, with crowds demanding the end of President Omar al-Bashir's three decades of rule.
