Mauricio Pochettino thinks it's unfair that Tottenham is compared to the heavyweights of the English game given that the images of their last winning title team are in black and white.
Pochettino The Spurs have moved to the upper echelons of the game in recent years – they are now regulars in the Champions League – but are still criticized for not having delivered trophies yet.
Despite their rapid progression over the past four years and their much lower expenses than their six major rivals, they are still judged against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
They were examined more closely after suffering another defeat in the semifinal this week, as they came out of the Carabao Cup to go to Chelsea after a defeat in penalties.
An animated Pochettino, who admitted he had slept little after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, spoke about the club's pre-game video, which features footage of Bill Nicholson leading the Spurs as a 1960-1961 champion. .
"Tottenham, no way to win … our glory, I'm watching the video about glory, it's with (Bill) Nicholson. It's black and white, "he said.
"And I watch it almost every week and to create that feeling again, it takes time. Four years, five years is nothing in the history of the club.
"Sometimes we forget where we came from four and a half years ago. This is the first mistake people make.
"Tottenham will be at the same level as Manchester United, Manchester City, this type of club, Chelsea. In the future, I hope so. But we sometimes forget where we come from.
"Four and a half years ago, when we got here, people begged to be competitive. Asked to have the opportunity, in five years, once to be in the Champions League, attract good players.
"Be regular in the semifinal cups. If you look at the record of the last four and a half years, we always lose when we lose against big teams. The semifinals, the finals, and I think we were regular in the top four, some seasons we were contenders – in a different way than the teams we are talking about.
"And it's totally unfair to charge the club like you're going to do in Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea.
"In the last 10 years, which team has won the most titles? Chelsea, no? And after losing on penalties, what are we going to say? Only to describe Tottenham as competitive, Chelsea was so competitive. It did not change the reality.
Pochettino also believes that the club's installation at Wembley has gone unnoticed regarding its impact on the Spurs.
They were undefeated in the 19 Premier League matches against White Hart Lane in their last season in 2016-17 before having to camp at the national stadium during the construction of their new, yet unfinished home.
He added: "By the time the team needed the last push, what happened to this process, in this club, with this generation of players? We build, build, build, but then White Hart Lane is gone, we moved to Wembley.
"All doubts about our behavior, the example of the first season of West Ham and many elements of this process that have stopped the evolution of the team about to win. But nobody says anything.
"Remember we were undefeated, 19 Premier League matches, at White Hart Lane in our last season there. And no one says what it means to move to Wembley to play and create another project.
"But not only, but we'll play only one season and then it's almost two seasons and nobody says anything.
"When Arsenal moved after playing in Highbury, people talked about huge problems, they are still paying."
Pochettino is firmly convinced that his club is going in the right direction and continues to excel.
He also explained how, instead of extending extra time or winning the Spurs on away goals, Thursday's match went directly to penalties.
"The most important thing (the thing) is to be there," he said. "And if you lose 3-0, 4-0 last night and in the first leg, you lose 3-0 or 4-0, you say," Hey, go, impossible. "
"We are close, we are close. With Harry Kane, we are close, with Fernando [Llorente], we are close.
"Thursday was a completely different team from the match we played in the first leg and we were competitive and 2-2 at the end.
"In Spain, we qualify for the final but because this season – it's a chance, again – we change the rules of the Carabao Cup and we go to penalties. And nobody says anything.
"But of course, I feel so good, I'm so happy because, what the club expects from me, I think we're getting more than what the club expects.
"I want to win but to win is to be patient, it is to build, it is to feel the support, it is to continue, it is to believe and when disappointments occur, like last night, more with your conviction. . This is the most important. "
