Sunderland's young striker Josh Maja made a £ 3.5 million transfer from the French side of Bordeaux.
The 20-year-old left the light stage cheap after refusing to sign an extension of his contract, which was exhausted at the end of the season.
Maja was on the radar of many Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Tottenham, after shining brightly in Ligue 1 this season.
He scored 18 goals in 30 appearances as Sunderland tried to return quickly to the Championship after being relegated last summer.
But despite the Mackems' best performance this season, and as a fan favorite, the club's statement at its release was icy.
"Josh Maja has completed his move to Bordeaux," he said.
"A graduate of the Sunderland AFC Academy, aged 20, he joined the Ligue 1 team permanently."
No bells or whistles, congratulations or best wishes.
Sunderland was forced to sell its most valuable badet after being bound to lose it for nothing this summer.
A contract made by the player at the beginning of the month made the owner Stewart Donald furious.
A number of Bundesliga members had also shown a keen interest in Maja.
Maja signed a contract with Ligue 1 until 2023.
