Sunderland's young striker Josh Maja made a £ 3.5 million transfer from the French side of Bordeaux.

The 20-year-old left the light stage cheap after refusing to sign an extension of his contract, which was exhausted at the end of the season.

Maja was on the radar of many Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Tottenham, after shining brightly in Ligue 1 this season.

He scored 18 goals in 30 appearances as Sunderland tried to return quickly to the Championship after being relegated last summer.

Maja had shone this term

"Josh Maja has completed his move to Bordeaux," he said.

"A graduate of the Sunderland AFC Academy, aged 20, he joined the Ligue 1 team permanently."

A number of Bundesliga members had also shown a keen interest in Maja.

Maja signed a contract with Ligue 1 until 2023.
