The NHS will sell patients genetic tests showing the risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer and dementia

[ad_1]

Genetic testing showing the risk that a person contracts diseases such as cancer or dementia should be sold to patients by the NHS.

Sequencing is already free for critically ill people, but according to new plans, it will be offered to healthy people for a few hundred pounds.

Those who choose this option will receive a full report detailing their likelihood of ever suffering serious illnesses, including various cancers and Alzheimer's disease.

But they will have to accept that their anonymous genetic data is kept by the NHS for research purposes, which raises potential confidentiality issues.

The proposals, announced Friday by US Secretary of Health Matt Hanbad, come less than two months after NHS researchers said they reached their goal of sequencing 100,000 genomes of patients with cancer and rare diseases.
