Elvis Alipui, a member of the Ghana Movement for People with Disabilities, urged on Friday disabled people to accept marriage requests between them, valid people, who often refuse to do so.
He noted that nearly 90% of married disabled people were marriages between one disabled person and another due to societal discrimination and stigma.
Mr Atipui pointed out that they were often faced with a hostile reception from the public whenever a disabled person contacted a person who could offer him a wedding, which often accompanied him. insults impossible to print and ridiculous remarks.
Mr Atipui said this at a public meeting organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) in Nima, in the suburbs of Accra, in order to mobilize support from public opinion to fill the growing gap of inequality in the country.
His comments elicited spontaneous applause and applause from the public, especially from disability groups, and some congratulated him for having declared their sincere needs on a public platform.
The meeting brought together people with disabilities, youth groups, traders, women's badociations and civil society organizations.
Mr. Atipui said that although the Ghana Disability Act of 2006 (Law 715) aims to end the discrimination faced by persons with disabilities, the 10-year moratorium renovating to become housing adapted for people with disabilities was not respected.
He added that persons with disabilities continued to be discriminated against while boarding public transport and that the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had nothing has been done to improve the seating position of commercial vehicles to make them more comfortable.
Mr. Atipui urged faith-based organizations to renovate their buildings to reflect the prescribed policy, noting that if the nation could bridge the gap of inequality, it had to start with religious organizations and homes.
