We all know now that fried foods are not usually the best choice for healthy eating, but how bad can they be? A new study aimed to answer this question and included serious warnings about specific fried foods.
The study followed more than 100,000 people – all postmenopausal women – from 1993 to early 2017. Researchers interviewed women who answered questions about their diet and scientists kept an eye on their rates mortality. They discovered that fried chicken and fish were the foods most closely related to premature death.
The researchers compared the death rates of people who usually ate fried foods at least once a week to those who did not eat them regularly at all. These comparisons showed a significant difference in mortality rates, but statistics showed a slight difference between specific fried food choices.
Overall, people who refrigerated at least once a week at least once a week had a higher risk of death by 8% compared to others. People who regularly enjoy fried chicken are 12% more likely to die due to cardiovascular problems, and those who eat fried fish are 13% more likely to die due to heart problems.
Unfortunately, the study did not separate other fried foods into statistical categories, but added fries to French fries in a diverse group. French fries have received increasing attention in recent years as a problematic food choice, with some scientists claiming that even a handful of french fries could affect your overall health.
The study has serious limitations, including the relatively strict age threshold and the fact that it follows only women, but it is an important step in determining how fried foods can be dangerous for us all.
