Tottenham's loss to Chelsea on penalties can do us good, says Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen believes that Chelsea's defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final at Tottenham on Thursday will only bring them closer as a team.

And that gives even more importance to the FA Cup – the competition that now gives the Spurs, who won a trophy in 2008, their best chance of winning silver this season.

Sunday, Vertonghen and his teammates will face the fourth round of the Premier League against Crystal Palace.

And following Chelsea's defeat at penalty shoot-out, the Belgian defender said: "We were all disappointed on Thursday, but that brings us together – like the match we had at Stamford Bridge when we shot 2-2 years ago.

"To win something would certainly mean a lot. I do not know how many years to come, but I hope that this year we can do it. The FA Cup is very important.

"It's shameful, this team deserves a lot more, but there are so many teams competing for a rare prize.In the past five years we have not been very lucky. It's a pity not to reward us, because this team and all club members deserve this reward, it would be nice to win something.

Winning something will be made even more difficult by the absences of Kane and Dele Alli. Kane will be away for at least one month and the midfielder until March.

In their absence, Lucas Moura missed the fourth penalty Thursday night after Éric Dier scored the third goal.
