Washington DC. [USA], January 25 (ANI): Have you ever noticed how cradling always works like magic when you're having a baby? It turns out that it works just as well for adults. In fact, according to a recent study, rocking not only leads to better sleep, but also promotes memory consolidation during sleep.
According to the researchers, sleeping well means falling asleep quickly and staying asleep all night long.
Laurence Bayer, the lead author of the research, said about the study: "Our volunteers – even though they slept well – slept faster when they were rocked and slept. longer with fewer nocturnal awakenings. We show that rocking is good for sleep. "
Researchers asked 18 healthy young adults to undergo sleep monitoring
in the laboratory. The first night was meant to get them used to sleep there. The participants stayed two more nights, one sleeping on a gently rocking bed and the other sleeping on an identical bed not moving.
The data showed that participants slept faster by swaying. Once asleep, they also spent more time sleeping with non-fast eye movements, slept more deeply and woke less. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Current Biology.
Next, researchers wanted to know how better sleep influenced memory. To evaluate memory consolidation, participants studied pairs of words. The researchers then measured their accuracy by recalling these paired words once before falling asleep and the next morning when they woke up. They found that people did better on the morning test when they were rocked while they slept.
Other studies have shown that tipping affects brain oscillations during sleep. They found that the rocking motion resulted in the training of specific brain oscillations during sleep with rapid eye movements.
As a result, the continuous rocking motion synchronized neural activity in the thalamocortical networks of the brain, which play an important role in the consolidation of sleep and memory. (ANI)
