Crystal Palace faces the Spurs at the England Cup today and Hodgson has come to the defense of Pochettino.

The president of the palace urges Pochettino to forget to win trophies and focus on football and the development of great players.

Hodgson is frustrated by the fact that Pochettino's name is still tied to failure as the Spurs have always let the trophies get lost, the last one taking place Thursday against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semifinals.

"He should be commended for what he has accomplished," Hodgson said.

"It makes me angry when it is mentioned that he did not win a trophy.

"What's a trophy?" What is the trophy of a great manager? People should know what football is today and stop talking about trophies.

"They should watch the fact that he has taken over a Tottenham team that has had its longest run as contenders for Premiership contenders in the Champions League, bringing tons and tons of local players … what relationship with a trophy?

"Anyone who looks at football and watches Tottenham play should be an admirer of the way they play football and the way they do business." The manager is an integral part of that.

"So, for me, if you only call the managers who have won a trophy, you basically have four or five."

When asked if this was why Pochettino was high on Manchester United's wanted list, the Crystal Palace official added, "It's not my business he's going to go to.

"I'm just reacting to the fact that, if all you're doing is knowing if you have a trophy in your name, I have trouble understanding.

"It's so naive when it comes to football coaching.

"Unfortunately, you have 97% to 98% of footballers failing because they may not have a chance to win a trophy. What about the Rotherham manager?

"I do not know who he is, I do not know much about Rotherham, but he may be doing a great job.

"Is there going to be a hopeless manager all his life who never wins a trophy? I do not see it, I'm sorry.

"You have to overthrow Man City, then Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal. It's not easy to win.

"Maybe he's going somewhere like Spain or Germany, his chances of winning a trophy will be greater."

"But the fact is, I do not know what his relationship is with Tottenham, but the praise he gets is fully deserved."
