Barbados denies the dengue epidemic

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Barbados' health authorities have denied a dengue epidemic in the country, while urging citizens to strengthen mosquito vector surveillance at their premises, particularly following an alert. Trinidad Health Agency (CARPHA) Caribbean public about the possibility of a regional dengue epidemic this year.

The outbreak reported in Jamaica last month has continued this year. In December 2018, Jamaica had 123 suspected, presumed and confirmed cases, exceeding the epidemic threshold of 96 for the month.

However, the Department of Health and Welfare said that in Barbados, for the week ending November 18 of last year, there were 64 suspected cases of dengue fever, no confirmed cases in the laboratory and no deaths. He said it was down from the same period in 2017, with 77 confirmed cases and 576 suspects.

Health officials said the latest dengue outbreak in Barbados took place in 2016, when cases confirmed monthly exceeded the epidemic threshold for most of the year.

"The ministry reminds homeowners and homeowners that they can do their part to reduce mosquito breeding by checking possible breeding sites on their premises every week, by covering or removing water containers such as that buckets, plastic containers and drums, and cleaning the containers can be attached to the inside.
