A new zero waste initiative supported by a coalition of leading brands using reusable containers will launch its first pilot projects in New York and Paris later this year.
Companies such as PepsiCo, Nestle, Unilever and Procter & Gamble are involved in Loop, a system that provides for packaging for items such as ice cream, mouthwash and deodorant to be picked up and sterilized before being reused.
"We operate what is currently the world's largest ocean plastic supply chain, we collect it and we integrate Unilever and Procter & Gamble products, etc.," said Tom Szaky, CEO and co-founder of TerraCycle, one of the partners in the project, said.
"But every day, more and more people end up in the ocean, so no matter how much we clean the ocean, we can never solve the problem,"
"This is really where Loop has emerged. For us, the root cause of wasting is not plastic, it's one-time use, and that's really what Loop is trying to change as much as possible. "
Each package in the system is designed for 100 or more uses, with consumers disposing of used items in a bag that can be removed or dropped off at a UPS store with Loop's Parcel Delivery Company.
Initially, reusable products will be available on the Loop website, consumers paying a deposit on the bottle, in the case of a deodorant or a mouthwash, upon initial purchase.
The deposit will be refunded when the package is returned.
The products will cost an amount similar to what customers are paying now, but the system could change some packaging, such as toothpaste, to make them reusable.
The layers will also be sold by Loop with the parts of the layers that are recyclable and recycled.
Loop includes eight of the ten companies listed by Greenpeace as the largest contributors or plastic waste in the world.
