JAKARTA – Eka Tjipta Widjaja, patriarch of one of Asia's richest families and founder of a sprawling Indonesian conglomerate, has pbaded away. He was 97 years old.

Son of migrants from Fujian, China, Widjaja was a coconut oil trader on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in the 1930s, before creating activities in the oil sector palm, pulp and mining paper.
