BRUNSWICK, MAINE –

An independent US Senator from Maine said he was joining a group of Senate colleagues to call on the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to take stock of research on a universal flu vaccine.

Sen. Angus King said the initiative was aimed at reducing "the constant burden of flu on American families every year." The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases released a strategic plan for a universal flu vaccine last year.

The federal website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (FCIA) states that influenza vaccine formulation is reviewed annually and updated to track the progress of viruses. As a result, the effectiveness can vary from one year to the next.

Senators say the institute should describe for them how it used the funding provided by Congress to develop a universal vaccine.
