President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that France wanted to maintain a "balance" in the alliance between carmakers Renault and Nissan following the arrest in Japan of Carlos Ghosn.

"We are ensuring that the balances of the alliance are preserved," Macron said at a press conference the first day of a visit to Egypt.

"I do not believe at all that what is happening, which is an individual case, is likely to upset the balance of the alliance", which had shown "stability," added the French president .

Currently, Renault holds 43% of the Japanese manufacturer Nissan, which itself owns 15% of the capital of the French company and 34% of the capital of Mitsubishi.

An overhaul of the group following the arrest in November of its CEO, Ghosn, Japan, accused of under-reporting its income, could harm Renault's influence.

Macron said he had discussed with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the situation surrounding the arrest of the Franco-Brazilian-Lebanese executive.

"I was simply concerned that the fate of a French compatriot respects the minimum decency we are entitled to expect," he said.

Macron said he repeatedly told Abe that he thought Ghosn's detention period was "very long" and had described the conditions under which he was detained as "hard".

Two months after the arrest of Ghosn, Renault has appointed two experienced executives from the automotive industry: Thierry Bollore as general manager and Jean-Dominique Senard as president.
