The prevalence of obesity continues to increase in almost all countries and is a major risk factor for health and mortality. The current approach to preventing obesity fails despite many ad hoc efforts, recommendations and calls for action. This commission following two Lancet The series on obesity examines obesity in a much broader context of underlying societal and political factors common to malnutrition in all its forms and to climate change. Commission calls for radical rethinking of business models, food systems, civil society participation and national and international governance to tackle the global syndrome of obesity, under-nutrition and climate change . A holistic effort to redirect human systems to improve human and planetary health is our most important and urgent challenge.
The Global Syndemic Commission is part of a series of nutrition initiatives, including the EAT-Lancet Commission, led by The lancet in 2019. More information in our editorial.
