Alstom and Siemens seek to ease EU concerns over railroad merger

France's Alstom said Germany and Siemens have proposed new concessions to overcome the European authorities' concerns over the planned merger of their train construction business.

A decision by the European Union on whether the agreement will be concluded is expected soon. The governments of both countries are in favor of what they consider to be the creation of a European champion, but Brussels is worried about competition in Europe.

Alstom said Monday in a statement that the two companies "decided to modify the solutions again" in order to address the concerns expressed. He said that "this package preserves the industrial and economic value of the agreement" but warned that there was "no certainty", that would satisfy the EU.

Alstom is best known for the French TGV and Siemens for the German ICE high-speed trains.
