James Milner admits that he is still "bitter" about the final of the League Cup against Manchester United in 2009.
Milner scored from the penalty spot to give Aston Villa the lead, but Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen's goals saw the Red Devils rally back to defeat 2-1 and lift the trophy.
But Milner thinks Nemanja Vidic should have seen red for his challenge against Gabriel Agbonlahor, which led to a shot from the fifth minute, but the referee was then not able to produce a yellow card .
When asked if scoring the penalty kick was a bittersweet moment, Milner told The Big Interview's podcast: "Yeah, probably.
"It's a memory you have: an early penalty that should have been red but that was not it. Then, obviously, it's a cup final, the pressure to take a penalty and I've scored it.
"But to be 1-0 anyway, you would like to think that you can go on and win. That did not happen
"There is obviously that bitterness that I think was a red card, really."
Milner scored on the opposite side of his habit and said it was a predefined plan to beat United goalkeeper Thomas Kuszczak.
"He would have watched me," said Milner about Kuszczak. "I had taken some of them before and they had all been on one side. So that was why, really. I'm sure he would have done his homework and would have gone with that.
Milner was to win the League Cup with Man City in 2013-14, as well as two Premier League titles and an FA Cup.
Now playing in Liverpool, the former Leeds midfielder has the opportunity to add a third division crown to his resume with four points ahead of the Reds.
