According to the authorities, six children in southwestern Tanzania were killed and their ears and teeth removed.

Some of the children's bodies, aged two to nine, also had missing limbs.

"It's a question of superstitious belief, and many people think that witchcraft will help," said Njombe District Commissioner Ruth Msafiri.

Ms. Msafiri also said that children should work together to solve this problem.

The correspondents say that some wizards in the area tell people that parts of the human body have special properties that can bring them wealth and luck.

"We urge all parents and guardians to stay alert and teach their children how to determine the motives of those around them," said the district commissioner at the BBC.

The children, three of them from the same family, were taken home at night when their parents sold food at the market.
