Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice-President, Sunday, January 27, 2018, was joined by Chief Justice Sophia Akufo and Reverend Father Andrew Campbell, President of Lepers Aid, Ghana, to commemorate World Anniversary Day for Leprosy 2019 Weija Leprosarium in Accra.

The theme of this year's celebration was "Ending Discrimination, Stigma and Prejudice". The last Sunday in January of each year is dedicated to World Leprosy Day to raise public awareness of the disease, to celebrate those affected and to mobilize support for the fight against leprosy.

Vice-President Dr. Batumia, who is also the godfather of the "healed" lepers, called for attention and care for people with leprosy and also urged to end discrimination at the same time. 39 against people with the disease.

"Discriminating people who have suffered from leprosy is not godly and, therefore, we should all get rid of it," said Dr. Bawumia.

The Vice President also said that the government is on track to achieve the zero goal of infection of leprosy in children and will do everything in its power by providing the necessary resources to l & # 39; reach.

"The government will support the various leproses to protect people living with leprosy and give them a tangible life," said Dr. Bawumia.

At the commemoration of 2019, he is also committed to joining the Lepers Help Committee to raise more funds for their activities.

Judge Sophia Akufo said that people diagnosed with the disease should not be forced to leave home to live in a remote facility, or be disowned by family members and society. .

Father Andrew Campbell expressed his thanks to the Vice President and many other philanthropists who over the years have shown concern, interest and support for the lepers in Ghana. He called for increased government support in funding the activities of the Lepers Aid Committee in Ghana to enable them to take good care of the healed lepers entrusted to them.

Already, all the healed lepers in Ghana are enrolled in the government's social intervention program called "Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty" (LEAP), a gesture that the Lepers Aid Committee thanks. Father Campbell also expressed his appreciation for the support provided to the committee by the Common Trust Fund for District Assemblies and wished many of these actions by the government.
