The Ministry of Health and Medical Services said that there had been 69 cases of this fatal disease since the beginning of the year, of which 18 resulted in hospitalization.
Epidemic response teams conduct surveys, health awareness campaigns and household inspections in the central division, which includes the capital Suva.
According to the ministry, the epidemic in Fiji has mainly affected young people aged 1 to 29 years.
Leptospirosis, which spreads in the urine of infected animals, can be felt as a bad case of influenza, but can also develop into rashes, kidney and liver failure, or even death.
