23andMe is well known for its DNA kits that promise to shed light on an individual's ancestral history and potential health risks.
But experts say Silicon Valley has become a driving force in medical research.
By leveraging its huge store of genetic data, 23andMe has recorded more than 110 peer-reviewed publications and launched its own drug lab. Researchers and external pharma companies have lined up to collaborate with the company, attracted by its ocean-sized data pool derived from more than 4 million customers who have agreed to let their DNA test results be used in research.

But in addition to mbadive money injections, 23andMe's foray into medical research has attracted growing interest. Some experts in privacy and bioethics have accused the company of taking advantage of the genetic material of customers in such a way that the most sensitive information can be disclosed.

A spokesperson for 23andMe said that customers had the opportunity to choose to participate in the search and that no identification information was shared with third parties.
