Government urged to fight youth unemployment

The President of the National Union of Students of Ghana (NUGS), Mr. Mohammed Sadiq Gombilla, called on the state to abandon the approach that potential employers require a certain amount of money. work experience of young people, especially recent graduates, before using them.

Mr Gombilla said that most state institutions and a number of private employers required years of work experience to young people before agreeing to employ them, adding that this demand aggravated the already catastrophic unemployment of the country.

Launch of the campaign

Mr. Gombilla spoke in Accra yesterday at the launch of a national campaign called "Urgent Action against Youth Unemployment", an initiative of Ghana's Dynamic Youth Movement (DYMOG), a non-governmental organization. focused on the mobilization of Ghanaian youth. for the construction of the nation.

The campaign plans to solicit the support of Ghanaian youth, civil society, students, media and other key stakeholders such as the Congress of Trade Unions (TUC), political parties and the government to collectively resolve the issue. problem of unemployment in the country.

In addition, it aims to present "youth-friendly", pragmatic and youth-oriented proposals in the agriculture, sports, entertainment, tourism and transport sectors.

The campaign takes place in three phases: launch, awareness and interactions with youth on campus and communities throughout the month of February and finally processions in March to complete the campaign.

Mr. Gombilla urged the government to put in place a system with sustainable structures to train and retrain young people and prepare them adequately for the labor market.

The group's president, Edward Tuttor, said youth unemployment is a threat to their lives. That's why the DYMOG decided to fix the problem.

"We are doing this to demonstrate that Ghanaian youth is not lazy.

We have good ideas and we would like our leaders to know that with the right structures in place, we will achieve outstanding performance, "he said.

At the same time, Professor Kojo Gavua from the Department of Heritage Archeology and Studies of the University of Ghana stated that the problem of unemployment persisted because the education system was too focused on theory and good grades.

He called on educational institutions at all levels to revise their programs and to encourage and motivate young people to be creative and entrepreneurial.

He also advised young people to be creative in their thoughts and take the initiative to create their own jobs even while studying, so that they do not trust anyone after school.

"Let's tackle the problem of youth unemployment through teamwork involving everyone, including students, families and all who matter, because the government can not do everything," he said. added.

Brother John Doe, President of the National Youth Council and the Congress of Trade Unions of Ghana, urged the government to provide the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) with adequate information to provide the nation with monthly figures on level of unemployment.
