Several high schools in Long Island City and Astoria will soon begin offering computer clbades as part of a new effort launched at the citywide by Amazon, the giant of the technology whose controversial project to build a new campus in the region.
The company announced today that students from 132 high schools in the five boroughs, including 11 schools in Astoria and Long Island City, will have access to introductory and advanced computer courses in the fall as part of the program. of his "Future Engineer" education program.
Amazon, through its program, will help fund courses designed by Edhesive, a New York-based STEM curriculum provider, in selected schools that currently do not offer computer science education.
"We want to make sure more New York City kids get the coding skills they need to succeed in many areas," Jeff Wilke, chief executive of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, said in a statement.
The company said in its announcement that its Future Engineer program, founded in November, aimed to make computing accessible to students from under-represented and under-served communities in the country.
The full-year curriculum includes preparatory and tutorials, as well as professional development options available to teachers. Live online support is also available seven days a week for students and teachers.
Students will also be able to access Amazon's cloud computing infrastructure for their coding projects and more by joining AWS Educate, an Amazon program, for free.
The company's New York initiative covers 37 schools in the Queens area, the largest of all boroughs, in neighborhoods like Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Flushing, Forest Hills and beyond. The program will include 27 high schools in the Bronx and Manhattan, including 35 in Brooklyn and 6 in Staten Island.
The Young Women's Leadership School in Queens, one of the schools targeted by the program, said their students will gain important and valuable skills for the current economy.
