President of the European Commission, Jean Mensa
The President of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, stressed the need to "cope with the high cost of our elections".
It considered that relying on developing partners to partially finance or reduce the cost of elections in Ghana would undermine the independence of the elections; therefore, more work is needed to solve these problems.
Ms. Mensa, who spoke at the 17th International Symposium on Electoral Matters, said: "Our elections are becoming a very expensive undertaking and we must always rely on development partners to fund it, compromising our $ 12.03 per elector, compared to $ 9.33 per elector in Nigeria (2015) and $ 5 per elector in Tanzania (2015) ".
She said that while the EC has made significant progress in refining its systems and processes over the last two decades, much remains to be done to cope with the high costs of our elections and the challenge of institutional capacity building. .
"For us, at the Ghana Electoral Commission, we want to know more about the progress made in the field of technology, because we have been using the same biometric registration and voting systems for ten years. to jump and start using new technologies our electoral process?
What new biometric systems are the most effective and reliable? Since coming to power, we have been concerned about the high costs badociated with the purchase of computer equipment, namely biometric recording and verification devices used in the electoral process. Therefore, information and feedback on efficient systems and equipment offering good value for money will be useful at this meeting, "she added.
