The Turkish company TechnoArge has created for airports an X-ray scanner made from a cannabis-based composite preventing radiation from spreading in the environment.
The composite material blocks radiation emissions, told Anadolu Agency Muzaffer Gokcimen, general manager of the company.
"The industrial cannabis fiber used in the manufacture of composites absorbs radiation," he said, adding that the scanner also disinfected the luggage during the scanning period.
"The X-ray scanner has been patented in 144 countries," he added.
According to the British Institute of Radiology, standard X-ray scanners emit very low-dose radiation.
The company is also working on a bulletproof vest made from cannabis composite, Gokcimen said.
He added that vests are lighter, cheaper and 20 times more durable than standard bulletproof vests.
"We are aiming to make automotive supplies from cannabis composites a year from now," he added.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently announced that 19 Turkish cities have been allowed to grow cannabis.
Since the 1990s, cannabis production has been limited to prevent marijuana production.
Cannabis is used as a raw material in the automotive, wood, construction, textile, cosmetics, biodiesel, food and paper industries.
