Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi, accused of murdering Adams Mahama, regional president of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were placed in the custody of the National Investigation Bureau (BNI) by a court of first instance d & # 39; Accra.
The two men were brought before the court yesterday on two charges of conspiracy and murder of a former leader of the NPP, who died of severe acid burns that allegedly inflicted on him by the accused.
Asabke was recently arrested in Ivory Coast by Interpol, but Afoko, younger brother of former NPP president Paul Afoko, has been the subject of a lawsuit since 2015.
The two accused appeared in court to determine whether they should be brought before a higher court.
The court, chaired by Magistrate Afua Sackey, returned the defendants until 12 February 2019.
Afoko was released last Monday but was arrested again after the Attorney General 's entry into Nolle Prosequi because of Asabke' s arrest.
Facts about the case
The charge, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong, told the court that on May 20, 2015, Adams Mahama stopped his vehicle at the entrance to his house when Afoko and Asabke had him down through the window. of the vehicle.
He added that as soon as the president of the NPP closed the window, the two men poured acid on his head, face and body and ran off on a motorcycle.
Adams Mahama reportedly screamed for help and his wife, Hajia Zeinabu Adams, who is the plaintiff in the case, came to her rescue.
"She helped the deceased get out of the vehicle and during this process, she was also burned to the body, including the chest and chest. Hajia Zeinabu Adams asked the deceased what had happened and the deceased told him that the two accused had poured acid on him, "Oppong Chief Inspector told the court.
The prosecutor said that Adams Mahama was later taken to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by his wife and two neighbors, who had also heard the screams of the victim and his wife.
"Adams Mahama also mentioned the names of the two accused of these neighbors as being those who poured him acid. The deceased, however, died the next morning at approximately 8:30 am, while she was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, "said the court.
He added that the police then recovered a gallon containing acid, a plastic cup used to pour the acid and clothes that the deceased was wearing at the time of the attack.
Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong told the court that all items, including an Afoko-owned tracksuit, that he allegedly wore the night of the attack, had been sent to Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to be tested and that it was proved that they all contained sulfur acid.
He added that new investigations were under way to establish the role that each accused had played in the killing of the late Mr. Mahama.
