Nearly half of American adults have heart disease or blood vessels

New report estimates that nearly half of all US adults have some form of heart or blood vessel disease, a medical milestone largely due to recent guidelines that have increased the number of people with high blood pressure .

The American Heart Association indicates that more than 121 million adults were suffering from cardiovascular disease in 2016. Excluding people with high blood pressure, 24 million, or 9% of adults , present other forms of disease such as heart failure or clogged arteries.

High blood pressure is now considered a reading greater than 130 out of 80. It increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and many other problems. Only about half of those affected have the disease under control.
