An hour after the flight, Mr. Ibbotson told the Air Traffic Control that he was reducing the altitude from 5,000 to 2,300 feet over the Channel Islands.
It later appeared that the signing of Cardiff's record had expressed fears for his life in messages sent to close friends.
In a WhatsApp voice note, he said in Spanish: "I'm in a plane that seems to be collapsing."
Aviation experts have said the chartered single-engine plane should not have risked flying in icy conditions.
