NEW DELHI: The number of swine flu victims in the country has risen to 169 this year, while 4,571 people have been tested positive for the virus, with Rajasthan accounting for more than 40% of cases.

According to government data, Rajasthan reportedly recorded 1,911 cases and 75 deaths until Monday, followed by Gujarat with 600 cases and 24 deaths.

Delhi reported the third highest number with 532 people infected with the H1N1 virus. Until now, no deaths due to influenza in the nation's capital have been reported.

Punjab reported 27 deaths and 174 cases, followed by Haryana, which recorded eight deaths and 372 cases. Maharashtra recorded 82 cases and 12 deaths until Monday.

With numbers on the rise, the Ministry of Health recently convened a meeting with states and urged them to step up their surveillance for early detection. He also asked them to reserve beds in hospitals to treat serious cases.

The official said states had not yet made any requests for drugs, diagnostic kits and other ways to deal with the problem.

"There is a sufficient stock of oseltamivir, a swine flu drug, and there is no shortage of N95 masks and diagnostic kits." In addition, states were asked to give warnings to people about what to do and what not to do, "said a senior official at the Ministry of Health.

The Delhi government has also issued a notice regarding the upsurge in swine flu cases.
