Now, it is likely that you have heard good things about the L & # 39; farewell, probably the hottest Sundance movie this year. People do not discuss the film because it's about this incredible independent film work, but rather because it's as close to perfection as you can get in the middle of the road.
I say that with affection because I was just as charmed by L & # 39; farewell like everyone. This is a film designed from the start to entertain without any potential obstacles. It's funny, but not too funny. You're going to tear yourself apart, but you probably do not need tissues. It offers American moms and dads a sweet look at a culture very different from theirs while telling a very human story to which everyone can identify.
L & # 39; farewell focuses on Awkwafina's Billi, a struggling youth whose parents transferred her to America while still in primary school. She keeps good memories of China thanks to a close relationship with her grandmother. Unfortunately, we learn that this grandmother is dying of advanced lung cancer. Her family arranges a wedding as an excuse to gather and see her again before she dies. All this without telling him what they are doing or even that she is sick. In fact, Billi is not invited for fear of showing his concern and grief and ruining the charade.
But she comes anyway. Awkwafina is incredible in everything, but she plays particularly well here in a leading role. It's a fairly sober drama with little nonsense comedy here and there. Much of the challenge in this role is to communicate non-verbally the conflict his character feels about lying to his grandmother and his desire to respond to his family's desire to maintain this lie.
As a product of two different cultures, the film confronts its themes through this conflict. The American part of her thinks as an individual, which means that she empties herself of the guilt of the lie. The Chinese part of her understands the thought as a collective and the burden of that guilt for her grandmother.
His parents are also basically American. And his brother's family moved to Japan. We see conflict most often with Awkwafina, but she is not the only one fighting it. And even though Awkwafina is in the movie, it only works through the incredible support cast. We follow a family of about ten people. Because of the writing and casting, they all have identifiable personalities; At the end of the film, one has the impression of knowing them and feeling the story weigh on their shoulders.
That's why L & # 39; farewell is such a perfect family film that I think I can be appreciated in all cultures. It is usually difficult to meet extended family members that we have not seen for a while, but with a common goal, the dynamics change a bit, it's space L & # 39; farewell occupied. There are quarrels, but it seems less negative and dramatic when it serves a common purpose.
L & # 39; farewell is an ideal film of well-being. But that's all you need, so be wary of the hype he's currently enjoying. People will probably talk a lot about the movie when it finally comes out. Your parents will ask you if you have seen it. And what the heck, if you are close by, you should probably take them out to take it followed by a nice hot meal. It is not very common for a movie that fulfills this purpose to be as good. Imagine all the 2018 Thanksgivings that ended with Bohemian Rhapsody.
