It was two big transfer titles, but in the end, Arsenal failed in its attempt to bring Yannick Carrasco or Ivan Perisic to the transfer in January.
Despite the fact that the whole world is looking for potential loan recruits this month, the Gunners have finally ended up with Denis Suarez – who sealed his move to North London for the rest of the season on the day of the deadline.
Several other names were linked, but it was the potential capture of Perisic and Carrasco that truly captivated fans' imagination.
Unai Emery did not hide that he wanted to add wingers to his squad this month. That is why Suarez was recruited and contacted with both Perisic and Carrasco.
In the case of the latter, the Belgian international had in fact been offered to Arsenal at the beginning of the window, the former man of Atletico Madrid wishing to return to Europe from China, where he spent last year with Dalian Yifang.
But at the time, the Gunners have little interest for the 25-year-old. Christopher Nkunku, from Paris Saint-Germain, and Perisic are the most attractive targets.
Arsenal stepped up its efforts for Perisic towards the end of the window, with discussions started at pace with Inter Milan on Croatian international.
Inter was ready to let the 29-year-old move out and Perisic had a lot to do with Arsenal and even submitted a transfer request, but Arsenal's financial problems made the transfer less likely.
On the North London club side, discussions have always centered on a loan agreement with a summer purchase option – but Inter Milan had no interest in such a contract.
They said Perisic's only starting point would be a permanent base, which Arsenal could not agree on, as they only operate on the credit market this month.
This has seen interest change for Carrasco, with its well-known availability, but again, interest has never really been taken seriously in China, Arsenal could not offer something tempting enough to conclude a market.
A lending approach was put in place, but was quickly rejected – Carrasco now appearing ready to stay in China, despite the keen interest shown by AC Milan.
With a move for Nkunku that does not materialize either, Emery will be a little disappointed not to fall into another natural wing this month.
But the Spaniard is well aware that Arsenal will be in a much stronger and clearer bargaining position once the summer window opens.
