When a dog born with a compressed spine was saved in 2017, he would have been abandoned because of his rare disease. But now he has a new family and they call him the "happiest dog alive."
Cooper, a 2-year-old American fox, suffers from short spine syndrome, a condition caused by consanguinity that results in compression of the vertebrae. It is a very rare disease, and only about 30 dogs in the world have it.
Elly Keegan, Cooper's owner, told SWNS, "It's welded in two places – on the neck and on the back. He does not seem to have a neck. Look behind him, he must turn his whole body.
Cooper was reportedly abandoned by breeders while it was only a few months old because of his condition and was rescued by an animal control in 2017. The Secondhand Hounds organization helped push through Cooper by a loving family from Minnesota.
Copper was found with many bruises and he had difficulty going to the bathroom. Since then he has been operated on and, even though he still needs a lot of care, he has been referred to as "the happiest living dog" by his family. He even has fans on Facebook.
"It's difficult because he can not take long walks or spend a lot of time on hard surfaces. It must be on loose soil, such as grbad or carpet, "said Keegan. "He's a very friendly dog. Wherever he goes, he attracts attention but he really does it.
Second Hounds helped another puppy with short spine syndrome. The group rescued a dog named Quasimodo in 2016. The German Shepherd, who was 5 years old at the time, was also described as a "love machine".
After the story of Quasimodo made headlines, the owners told more stories of their dogs suffering from the same syndrome.
"Cooper is an example of what disabled dogs have a lot of love for giving and making great pets," said Teri Woolard, owner surrender coordinator at Secondhand Hounds.
