Outbreak of illness closes a school

"We had a large number of students with influenza, strep throat, different viruses and fevers. So we thought that would be the best way to prevent it, "says Jodie McPherson, Director of Support Services at Chickasaw.

The disease is on the rise at the Chickasaw Early Learning Center, which closes the school for two days.

"On Tuesday, we had 9 children that we had sent home with fevers of 101. Six were confirmed by the flu, these 6 children were in the same clbad, so we kept an eye on it yesterday, we had already We sent four or five more people to our home and we knew we had problems, "said Chickasaw Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joe Walters.

Teachers are working hard to break this trend: disinfect their clbadrooms and make sure all learning materials are sterilized.

"It spreads easily, there is always the opportunity to climb to the same place," says Dr. Walters.

Susan's preschool clbad at Holman had the sickest kids sending a red flag to some parents.

"In fact, last week our clbad had 6 students out of 17 at one time of the week and I think even parents were worried about coming back Monday," Holman said.

She says these precautions are very important. It can save others from the disease.

"They also have older, younger brothers and sisters, and we even have newborns in the community who are our student siblings," said Holman.

Chickasaw is the first school in our region to close this year due to illness. Acting Superintendent, Dr. Joe Walters, stated that he did not want other schools in Mobile and Baldwin County to have an outbreak of influenza or strep throat.

"Those who are sick are happy because they lack nothing and those who are well are really excited because they do not want them here with those who are sick," said the Dr. Walters.

Teachers say that all children are together at one time of the day and that it is very important to keep your children at home for at least 24 hours after their illness.
