A backlog of untested cervical cancer screening samples has been discovered | Society

More than 150,000 untested cervical cancer screening samples were found in laboratories across England, discovered Whitehall's spending watchdog.

The National Audit Office (NAO) stated that the changes to the test provisions resulted in a backlog. This number has since been reduced, but the magnitude of the backlog suggests that hundreds of thousands of women had to wait before they knew if they needed treatment.

This disclosure is the subject of an extremely critical report that has also identified some of the poorest performing areas in the United Kingdom in cervical, colon and bad cancer screening programs, as well as than aneurysm of the abdominal aorta.

The report revealed that at some point last year, only one in three women who had been smear tested had received their result within the recommended 14 days.

Robert Music, CEO of Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, said the results were very disturbing.

"Over the past year, many women have expressed concerns about delays in the implementation of their results, and it is simply not right for women to be unduly stressed due to failures. in the management of the program, "he said.

The report revealed that none of the screening programs for the different conditions met the national performance targets.

Auditors identified problems with outdated computer systems, raising fears that people may not be able to participate in cancer screening invitations.

It follows serious incidents reported last year regarding cervical and bad cancer screening programs, when it was found that thousands of women had not received invitations.

The NAO has indicated that the launch of a new program intended to initially test samples of human papillomavirus (HPV) – which would be at the origin of most cases of cervical cancer of the uterine – was announced in 2016 but should not be fully introduced until December.

This announcement meant that there would be a reduction in the number of labs needed to badyze the results, which would prompt staff to leave in search of job security, but the delay in putting in place Implementing the change meant that the staff was still needed.

According to the report, the resulting staff shortage has resulted in "a drop in performance against time-line targets" and an accumulation of samples waiting for testing.

"In October 2018, a backlog of 98,000 cervical cancer screening samples was waiting to be tested by laboratories in England.

"NHS England told us that it was working on reducing the backlog, which went from 152,742 in March 2018 by transferring sample badysis to the country, in order to reduce the burden imposed the most pressured laboratories, "says the report.

About 98% of women should receive their results within 14 days of cervical cancer screening, but this goal has not been achieved since November 2015, the report says.

He added, "All screening programs rely on a complex and aging computer system to identify who to invite to participate in screening."

The NAO also stated that none of the adult cancer screening programs had reached its standard coverage target in 2017-2018.

A government spokesman said, "We are aware of a problem regarding invitations to cervical cancer screening. NHS England is striving to resolve this problem and all women who have not received an invitation or reminder are contacted. All concerned women can be rebadured that they would have received a letter but not two.

"The government and the NHS England are clear that such failures should not occur and an investigation is under way."
