Jerusalem: Israeli researchers have discovered 27 new molecules, which could constitute a potential treatment for hepatic steatosis, obesity and wound healing.
The results, led by Professor Amiram Goldblum of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, were made possible by a new algorithm, which selected the 27 molecules with the highest therapeutic potential in a database of 1.56. million molecules.
These molecules, which are currently undergoing pharmaceutical evaluations to treat obesity and incurable fat liver disease, all activate a special protein called PPAR-delta (peroxisome proliferator-activated delta receptor).
According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, the activation of PPAR-delta could increase physical stamina and reduce the size by causing muscle cells to burn more fat.
"With such a large group of highly active molecules, there is a high probability of finding treatments for many common diseases. However, we should wait until all the experiments are completed before we can hope too much, "said Goldblum.
Future evaluations will hopefully include testing of treatments to improve wound healing and prevent kidney toxicity in diabetics, the researchers said.
The new Goldblum molecules are of great pharmaceutical interest.
Integra Holdings, the biotechnology company of the Hebrew University, has determined that 21 out of 27 have the potential to succeed on a pharmaceutical level, especially as a possible treatment for fatty liver disease.
In addition, the Israel Institute of Medical Research Heller is currently testing the physical endurance properties of PPAR-delta in mice.
Goldblum predicts that in a few years we hope to see many of these molecules being developed for clinical studies on humans.
