TOLEDO, Ohio – The impact of the major restructuring of General Motors this year will be felt beyond the five North American plants that are expected to close in the coming months.
Thousands of jobs at automotive parts suppliers and other industry related positions are also involved.
Two employers with 300 workers in Ohio are already planning to close because of GM's plans to run a slow-motion badembly plant near Youngstown in March.
GM says that many of its blue-collar workers whose jobs are being phased out will find work in the other factories of the builder.
But this will not be the case for many of the supply chain workers who manufacture parts, drive trucks and operate the GM plants.
Some economists estimate that three out of four jobs are lost for every job at a car factory.
